An Athlete’s Best Friend

When a serious sports injury occurs, such as a torn ligament or a severe knee injury, it’s usually an orthopedic surgeon who makes the repair. Fortunately, today’s orthopedic surgeons, some of whom specialize in sports medicine, are trained in a wide array of minimally invasive techniques.

Consider, for example, arthroscopic surgery.  The surgeon makes small incisions near the injury and inserts an arthroscope, a small tube containing a video camera and a fiber optic lighting system that transmits images and allows the surgeon to see the full extent of the injury and perform the necessary repairs.

The benefits of minimally invasive surgery are many:

Less Painful than traditional surgery

Less Scarring thanks to smaller incisions

Faster Recovery often returning to normal activities in just a few days.

Thanks to advances in pain management and anesthesiology, surgeries for sports injuries are often performed on an outpatient basis, allowing most patients to return home within one to four hours of surgery.
