BONUS ARTICLE #2 Improve Your Memory Power
As we age, our memories start to decline. The risk of Alzheimer’s disease, for example, doubles every five years after age 65. But memory loss is not inevitable. Staying active both physically and mentally can help keep your memory sharp and your mind focused. Here are the four keys to improving your memory.
Diet: To improve your memory, eat a healthy balanced diet that has plenty of whole grains, antioxidants and the omega 3 fats found in coldwater fish such as salmon or tuna.
Stress Reduction: When you are under stress, the body produces cortisol, a hormone which can impair memory. That’s the reason learning to reduce your stress level though relaxation techniques such as stretching or yoga is important.
Physical Fitness: There is no substitute for physical fitness. Like the rest of your body, your brain benefits from daily exercise. Whether it’s a brisk walk or daily stretching, exercise improves blood flow, which is vital to the brain’s health.
Mental Fitness: Working on a crossword puzzle or solving a brain teaser, even learning a new language or how to play a new musical instrument, are examples of focused mental exercises that keep the mind healthy.
