The Health Challenges of Growing Older

Growing older brings a new set of challenges for people, many of them medical in nature. Experts generally agree that these are the five most serious health problems facing seniors: Heart Disease and Stroke account for 40 percent of all deaths ages 65 to 74 and 60 percent of all deaths after the age of 85. Memory Loss, especially short-term memory loss, increases with age. Osteoporosis, which weakens the bones, is responsible for 1.5 million fractures annually. Cancer is 10 times more likely to affect people over 65 than those younger than 65. Depression can be caused by increased isolation, lack of independence or the long-term illnesses that can come with older age.
