Meeting the Challenges of Growing Older

Your hair is grayer. Your memory is not as sharp. And neither is your hearing. Welcome to the challenges of growing older. Thereʼs no getting around the fact that our bodies change as we age. Some of these changes are minor, but many can significantly effect your health. Here are some of the key health issues that seniors need to manage with the help of their physician.

Your Heart

The older you live, the more likely you are to have cardiovascular disease, which can cause a heart attack or stroke. A healthy diet and regular exercise are two of best ways to keep your heart healthy. Also, have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked frequently.

Your Bones

Bones can become thinner and more brittle in old age, especially in women, sometimes resulting in a fragile bone condition called osteoporosis. This increases the risk of breaking a bone during a fall. Talk with your physician about what you can do to prevent both osteoporosis and falls.

Your Mind

Itʼs normal for people to experience some forgetfulness as they grow older. Whatʼs not normal is dementia – when memory loss becomes so severe that it affects a personʼs ability to function socially.

And Finally, Cancer

Sixty-seven percent of cancer deaths occur in people older than 65. Talk to your doctor about having regular cancer screenings and an annual physical.
