Is Your Job Killing You?

Feeling stressed these days? You’re not alone. Some 83 percent of working Americans say they feel stressed at their jobs. And that’s not good for anybody’s heart. Here’s why.

When stress occurs, the body releases a hormone called cortisol. Recent studies have shown that people with high levels of cortisol are five times more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke. Stress can also lead to high blood pressure, weight gain and diabetes.

That’s the reason reducing stress is so important if you want to help your heart stay healthy. So what can you do? If you have a hectic schedule at work, try to slow down sometime during the day and relax for 10 or 15 minutes. Share a good laugh with a friend or listen to your favorite music. Take a long walk or work out at the gym. All these are proven ways to reduce stress and the levels of cortisone in your blood. You’ll feel better, and your heart will thank you.
