Joint Replacement

Joint Replacement

As we grow older, the joints in our body start to wear out. That process and the onset of arthritis can cause increasing pain and decreasing mobility. But now, thanks to the miracles of modern medicine, there is an answer to this medical problem: Joint Replacement Surgery. Here's Dr. Firstname M. Lastname, an Orthopaedic Surgeon with Medical Center/Hospital, to tell us more.

What is Joint Replacement?

Joint Replacement is surgery which replaces a problem joint with an artificial joint, called a prosthesis. The hips and knees are the most likely candidates for a joint replacement, but almost any joint can be replaced, including the shoulder and elbow. It's a common and standard procedure in medicine today.

Who would need a Joint Replacement?

It's primarily for people who suffer chronic, usually arthritic pain in their joints. It's not for everybody, but in many cases it can really improve the quality of a person's life.

What are the benefits?

I like to tell my patients that a joint replacement won't make them young again, but they will enjoy many benefits: increased mobility and flexibility, reduced joint pain, and increased limb strength. It gives people more freedom and independence. They're able to participate in low-impact activities they might have neglected for years, like walking around the house or raising their arms above their shoulder. The results can be dramatic.
