Let’s Get Physical
An Annual Physical Exam for Your Child Offers Multiple Benefits

Childhood is a time of rapid growth and development. Consider, for example, the changes in height, weight, coordination and language skills that occur in just four years between the ages of six and ten.

The purpose of an annual physical exam is to track these changes and make sure your child is on the right course to good health. In addition to making sure your child’s immunizations are current, your pediatrician will check your child’s physical growth and development, including height and weight. Mental and emotional issues, such as depression and attention deficit disorder, will also be addressed. Special problems like difficulty falling asleep or dealing with puberty can be discussed. Your pediatrician can also set up an emergency plan with your school if your child suffers from a chronic medical condition, like allergies or asthma. Finally, having an annual physical exam will help your pediatrician become more familiar with your child’s health and be able to detect changes more easily.

What About A Sports Physical? Many school districts require a sports physical before athletes can participate in organized sports. The purpose of the physical is to detect and address any health problems that might be affected by sports activities. Many schools offer sports physicals. If yours does not, you can make an appointment with your pediatrician. It’s a good idea to schedule the physical at least six weeks before the sport begins to practice in order to address any concerns.
