Live What You Learn

What’s the best way to meet the many health challenges of growing old?

Four words: Stay Active. Eat Healthy. Exercise and diet play key roles in promoting your health and living a longer life. So find a form of exercise that you enjoy and stick with it. And take a close look at what you’re eating.

One other vital step you should take is to schedule an annual physical exam with your primary care physician. This is an opportunity to make sure you are up-to-date on all important screenings, especially blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol checks to see if you may be at increased risk for heart disease or stroke. Having appropriate screenings to detect cancer during its earliest, most curable stages is also vital, including mammograms and Pap tests for women, prostate cancer screenings for men, colon cancer screenings for men and women 50+, and skin cancer screening for everyone. Ask your physician if you should be checked for osteoporosis to make sure you aren’t at increased risk for bone fractures. Finally, keeping an active social life with friends and family is one of the best ways to prevent depression.
