Planning on having a baby in the near future? Giving birth can be one of the most joyous experiences in a woman’s life. But proper planning is critical. At (name of hospital), we’re ready to give you a special delivery.

“The first step in having a healthy baby is taking care of yourself,” says Dr. (name, title). “Before you become pregnant, you should have pre-pregnancy counseling with your OB/GYN. This visit can help you and your spouse to discuss important health issues such as proper nutrition and stopping smoking. Every woman who is planning to become pregnant should be tested for antibodies for Rubella (German measles), HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B. Additional tests may be required if you are 35 or older or have had problems during a previous pregnancy. “

During the first three months of your pregnancy, diet is especially important. Drink plenty of water and eat foods high in complex carbohydrates, proteins and fiber, including whole-grain cereals and bread. Educational and emotional support is also important. Talk openly to your healthcare provider about any concerns or problems that may occur.

Weight gain often occurs during the second trimester. Most women of normal weight gain between 25 and 35 pounds. Keep moving and exercising. Simple physical activity such as walking can help reduce constipation, a common condition during pregnancy.

The most profound physical changes to your body occur during the third trimester. You may experience uncomfortable pressure, sleeplessness, frequent urination, false contractions and other symptoms. This is also the ideal time to participate in a childbirth education course. (Hospital may choose to insert information about their pre-natal classes.)
