Seven Health Tips for Men

Taking charge of your health is important for men at any age, and it’s never too late to start developing healthier habits. In addition to seeing your doctor on a regular basis, here are seven more ways to practice good health.

  1. If you don’t feel right, make an appointment.Have a cut or sore that’s not healing? Notice a change in a mole on your skin? Are you experiencing unexplained weight loss or a pain that won’t go away? Remember that major health issues often begin with minor problems that could have been treated with much greater success if they had been detected early. Don’t try to “tough it out.” See your doctor when you think something is wrong.
  2. Ask you doctor about cancer screenings. When and how often you have a screening for colon cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer often depends on your age, family history and lifestyle.
  3. Share your family history with your doctor.Informing your primary care physician about any family history of heart disease, diabetes or other chronic health conditions is a proven way to help your doctor minimize those risks and increase early detection.
  4. Get enough sleep. You need at least seven hours each night to help your body relax and rejuvenate.
  5. Get some exercise.150 minutes a week is recommended. But just a 10-minute brisk walk or playing with your kids or grandkids can provide health-healthy and stress-relieving benefits.
  6. Don’t forget your vaccinations.Remember to have a seasonal flu vaccine every year. If you’re age 50 or older, talk to your doctor about a shingles vaccine as well as a vaccine for pneumonia at age 65 or earlier if you have certain medical conditions.
  7. Stop smoking. It’s one of the best things you can do to improve your health and add years to your life.
