Taking Head Injuries Seriously

Taking Head Injuries Seriously

In March, Natasha Richardson, a well-known actress, died after hitting her head on a beginner’s ski slope. After the accident, she appeared to be OK. But four hours later, her condition worsened rapidly, and she died after being rushed to a nearby hospital. A fracture of her skull had torn an artery, causing blood to collect between her skull and brain.

Natasha Richardson’s death highlights the importance of taking any head injury seriously. Just ask Connie and Donald McCracken. They were watching the news about Richardson’s death and thought about their 7- year-old daughter, Morgan. Two days earlier, Morgan had been hit in the head by a baseball. There was swelling around the injury, but Morgan appeared to be fine. When Morgan complained of a headache, the McCrackens immediately rushed her to the hospital ER. Morgan had suffered the same injury as Natasha Richardson. According to the doctors, if Morgan had gone to sleep that night, she never would have woken up.
