Understanding Sepsis

Each year, at least 1.7 million Americans develop sepsis, a serious medical condition which occurs when the body has an extreme response to an infection. Without quick treatment, sepsis can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and even death.

Anyone with an infection can get sepsis, but people are more susceptible if they are 65 or older, have a weakened immune system or have a chronic condition such as diabetes, lung disease, cancer or kidney disease. Pregnant women and children younger than one are also at higher risk.

Because the health and safety of our patients are so important, My Hometown Hospital has made infection control a top priority, with a focus on frequent hand washing, surgical sterility, testing for staph infection and other best-practice procedures.
