Why You Need A Family Doctor

Everybody wants good health. And just about everybody knows that a low fat diet and regular exercise play an important role in achieving that goal. But there’s another path to healthy living that many people forget: having a personal physician.

Building a long-term relationship with a physician offers many advantages. Your primary care provider will know your health history, a critical tool in diagnosing a medical problem. Even if you don’t currently have health problems, a family physician can help you practice preventative medicine and make healthy choices. You’ll also feel more comfortable talking about sensitive medical issues. And through regular checkups, your doctor can detect the early signs of a medical condition, such as high blood pressure or weight gain, and begin treating them before they become serious.

So how do you choose a personal physician? A family practice physician sees patients of all ages and gender, with a focus on treating all the members of the family and becoming familiar with their medical history. If your children are grown, consider choosing an internist. Many women prefer making an OB/GYN their primary care provider. But the most important factor is to choose a physician with whom you feel comfortable.
